Top 6 Countries Leading the Way in Medical Cannabis Research

It's fairly well known that the U.S. is not a part of the leading countries in madical marijuana research, but does your Country make the cut?

The U.S. still considers the herb a schedule 1 narcotic (the DEA website defines Schedule I drugs as substances, or chemicals that are drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Some examples of Schedule I drugs are: heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), marijuana (cannabis), 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy), methaqualone, and peyote).

Because of the strict holds on the product, any medical research must get the “o-k” from the DEA and the National Institute of Drug Abuse...leaving the reseach lacking in the States.

Many countries do however put time and money into researching the benefits marijuana offers to users. Do you live in s country where research of this medical plant is accepted and furthered?

Spain

While this country currently prohibits the use of marijuana as a medicine, there still have been many contributions that have come out of Spain to the cannabis community.

Canada

With impending leagalization of the herb, Canada is about to become the largest case study of how the benefits and risks of marijuana are going to play out. Leaders in the industry and out agree that much more research needs to be put into the area.

Czech Republic

This country is home to International Cannabis and Cannabinoids Institute (or ICCI). This Institute is a major player in the world of major marijuana research. In the end, the research that takes place at the ICCI is to help people gain access to the medicines that works best for them.

Uruguay

Two thumbs up for Uruguay, as it was the first country to regulate the use and sale of marijuana! They encourage researchers to come into their country for research and contributions to the field. Country leaders even encourage scientific institutions to actively work on making big contributions to the medical marijuana knowledge base.

Netherlands

Alongside Canada and Israel, the Netherlands is one of only three countries sponsored nationally for their medical marijuana programs. Their main players in the research game have a mission to collect information on cannabis, distribute knowledge, raise awareness, and improve the overall acceptance of medical cannabis.

If you read the last blurb, you probably guessed the final (but not least important) country on our list:

Isreal

This country is considered a global leader in the world of medical marijuana research! They house the world's largest medical cannabis production, development, and research facility – it has been #1 for over 50 years! THC was fist discovered here, an indication that they really are/were pioneers. They were also amung the first countries to legalize the herb, and are working towards building a legal exporting empire for the distribution of legal, medical marijuana.

As the times quickly progress, we hope more and more countries can begin to jump on board with medical research of marijuana. Whether you are for against marijuana in general, we can all benefit from extensive research on the herb, from a scientific standpoint.

Did your country make the list?
